Reading Olympics 2018

Dear 6th Grade Parents,

Your child has expressed an interest in joining EHMS’s Reading Olympics team. The members of this team will share the responsibility for reading 35 titles from a pre-selected list.  They will then compete as team against other schools in our Hunterdon County area.  Each student will be required to read at least FOUR books from the list to participate—the more they read, the better their team performs.  The competition for sixth graders will occur during the evening of Monday, March 19, 2018, at Holland Township School.  Each team will compete in three rounds of twenty questions about the books read.

Most of the preparation for this event will consist of the participants’ independently reading the books from the Hunterdon County Reading Olympics list.  These books are located on a special shelf in our library, but copies are limited so I urge you visit the public library or local bookstore as well.  Team meetings will occur during 6th grade Activity Period (the day to be determined by the flexibility of each individual member) so as not to interfere with after school activities, and these books may be used for any L.A. independent reading requirements.  As we move closer to the competition, more frequent meetings will take place to allow team members to quiz one another on the contents of the books read. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the competition on March 19, 2018—carpooling is encouraged as parents do not stay and watch due to lack of room.

I will begin meeting  in November, 2017, in the library with students who are interested in reading at least SIX books or more and are committed to participating in the Reading Olympics. Students can then begin reading immediately from this year's list of books and are required to take notes for each book read in order to better prepare for March 19th.  Be sure to use this graphic organizer for note-taking.

Reading Olympics is a very exciting, unforgettable activity for the participants; it is one of the highlights of our 6th graders' experiences here—each year we all chip in and have a fantastic pizza party after school before the competition, and the school purchases team t-shirts for all.  I look forward to another positive experience working with your 6th graders during this celebration of reading!  Please verify your permission for your child to participate by signing and returning this permission slip by (date to be determined).
